Wilson Statement regarding Senator James Jeffords May 24, 2001

Washington, DC –Congresswoman Heather Wilson issued the following statement today after Senator James Jeffords’ announcement that he will leave the Republican Party to become an Independent:

“Senator Jeffords made a decision of conscience. I`m sad that he is leaving the Republican Party. The Republican Party is a big tent and there is room for spirited disagreement and a variety of views. Those disagreements make us stronger.

“At times, I find myself at odds with some of my Republican colleagues and the Republican leadership. In fact, I did yesterday on elements of the education bill. I enjoy working across party lines with diverse groups of people, whether it`s on bilingual education or energy policy. It fits me well and I`ll keep doing that.

“The challenge now in the Senate is for the Democrats to lead and to govern. In some ways, that`s harder than being the critic. But we have important things to do, and they cannot wait.

“We must complete the tax relief package before going home for Memorial Day. We must complete work on the most significant education bill in 35 years when we come back. And we must develop a common sense, long-term energy policy for this country.

“I`ll keep working on it.”
