Albuquerque Student Moves Forward in Rhodes Scholarship Selection December 06, 2000

Albuquerque, New Mexico—The New Mexico Rhodes Scholar Selection Committee today announced their selection of this state’s Rhodes Scholar nominee. Sandia High School graduate Eleanore Conant was chosen by the committee to represent New Mexico in the final rounds of Rhodes Scholar selection for the region, which will take place in Houston on December 8 and 9. The daughter of Henry and Ettajane Conant, Conant, is a senior at the University of Redlands in California and is majoring in Biology. At Oxford she hopes to enroll for a degree in Zoology. “For me, science, like religion, is the love of the unknown,” says the 22-year-old aspiring scientist. “For every question you answer, you enter another realm of mystery that is still the unknown.” Besides her obvious dedication to academics, Conant has lettered in three sports, including the University of Redlands National Championship Water Polo team. She is a runner, plays the oboe, and participated recently in a study-abroad program in Limerick, Ireland. Rhodes Scholars are appointed for at least two years of study in the University of Oxford in England. All education costs are paid on the Scholar’s behalf by the Rhodes Trustees. Each year 32 U. S. students are among more than 90 Rhodes Scholars worldwide who take up degree courses at Oxford University. The Rhodes Scholarships were established in 1903 by Cecil Rhodes who dreamed of improving the world through the diffusion of leaders motivated to serve their contemporaries, trained in the contemplative life of the mind, and broadened by their acquaintance with one another and by their exposure to cultures different from their own. Mr. Rhodes hoped that his plan of bringing able students from throughout the English-speaking world and beyond to study at Oxford University would aid in the promotion of international understanding and peace. Conant will travel to Houston this weekend for the final interviews, where she’ll compete against students from Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming. Nationally, only 32 students are selected every year for a Rhodes Scholarship. “The Committee agreed that Eleanore is an excellent student and athlete, with a delightful sense of humor,” said Wilson. “We are very proud to nominate Eleanore as our Rhodes Scholar nominee.” Wilson was selected as a Rhodes Scholar in 1982 and serves as Secretary of the New Mexico Committee. ###
