Wilson Presents a Total of 25 Computers to Five Albuquerque Public Schools August 28, 2000

Griegos Elementary, Acoma Elementary, Madison Middle School, Los Padillas Elementary, and Hodgin Elementary all receive five computers through program with WorldCom
ALBUQUERQUE, NM — Congresswoman Heather Wilson today presented 5 computers to Griegos Elementary School at a ceremony with Griegos Principal Eddie Lucero and representatives from WorldCom. In addition to Griegos Elementary, Acoma Elementary, Madison Middle School, Los Padillas Elementary, and Hodgin Elementary will all be receiving 5 computers each thanks to the generosity of WorldCom. WorldCom, through its local Albuquerque facility, is donating 25 of the company`s excess computers to Albuquerque area schools to help ensure that area students have access to technology and online learning opportunities. Congresswoman Wilson worked with representatives of WorldCom to secure the computers for Albuquerque area schools and they worked together with APS to determine which schools were most in need of the computers. “In today’s increasingly high tech world it is critical that our children have access to computers and the power of the Internet and I am very pleased to have been able to help provide additional computers for these five schools,” said Wilson. “What gives wings to our children’s dreams is a quality education and I hope that these computers will help the schools continue to provide an outstanding education for these great kids.” "WorldCom is proud to be a major employer in Albuquerque, and proud that we can lend a hand to Albuquerque area schools by donating these personal computers to help students learn and grow," said Scott Dasal, Center Director of WorldCom`s Albuquerque facility. "By providing these computers, and our MarcoPolo training program, which is helping teachers become more tech-savvy, WorldCom hopes to provide more on-ramps to technology and learning for students in Albuquerque." Congresswoman Wilson has been a leader on education issues during her two years in Congress. She has sponsored legislation to help deal with the teacher shortage in New Mexico, the GI Bill for Teachers, and she has been a leader in the effort to ensure that students in New Mexico have access to the technology that they need to be ready for today’s high tech world. In addition to helping secure the twenty-five computers being donated today, Wilson has worked with local businesses to secure cell phones for area schools that will allow them to better communicate with parents. WorldCom also runs the MarcoPolo Internet Content for the Classroom program, which is providing specialized Internet training to teachers throughout 36 states and the District of Columbia, including New Mexico. The training initiative, which is funded by the WorldCom Foundation, is aimed at giving teachers the knowledge and tools they need to integrate Internet resources into their classroom curricula.
