Albuquerque, NM – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today joined the New Mexico Underground Contractors Association at a worksite to announce that more than 950 jobs were created within the small business group last year.
Wilson congratulated NMUCA on a great year. The NMUCA is a group of 63 local contractors that combine for about 4,000 employees.
“This is our economy’s greatest strength in action. These 63 small businesses helped create 950 jobs in New Mexico,” Wilson said. “Small businesses like these contractors are driving our economic recovery and creating jobs.”
While viewing the jobsite today, Wilson tried her hand at running construction equipment that builds curbs. The jobsite is a new subdivision and showcases the economic potential of the Albuquerque area.
“A foundation has been built for more job creation in New Mexico,” Wilson said. “I’m pleased that the economy’s recovery is projected to continue throughout this year, but we have to remain focused until every New Mexican who wants to work can find a job.”
The NMUCA provides construction and repair to facilities for wastewater or storm water. More than 80 percent of the projects are public works efforts.
“Although government doesn’t create wealth, public/private partnerships like these can combine with sound policies, such as low taxes, fair regulations and integrity in boardrooms, to encourage a climate of growth,” Wilson said. “Every good job in New Mexico keeps someone here, helping build the stable neighborhoods that are the foundation of a healthy community.”
New Mexico’s job creation rate was the sixth-highest in the nation last year at 1.3 percent, and the outlook is higher for this year.
