Wilson Announces $1 Million for Rural Economic Development in New Mexico July 12, 2002

Washington, DC - Congresswoman Heather Wilson announced today New Mexico has been awarded $1 million for economic development in rural New Mexico under the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Rural Readiness program. With this funding, three communities will be selected per quarter to receive technical and product development and marketing assistance. A Technical Resource Team will assess community assets, validate targeted markets and industries appropriate to the community. The Technical Resource Team will help the community establish a set of strategic action items. The program will then provide technical and financial resources to assist the community in partnering in collaborative marketing alliances in the state. “Business owners and workers in rural areas can find themselves very isolated from mainstream markets and have unique needs,” said Wilson. “The Rural Readiness program can help these communities tap into new opportunities, grow jobs, and improve their quality of life. “The Department of Commerce is pleased to partner with the people of New Mexico. This investment is a great example of Congresswoman Heather Wilson’s commitment to help the Bush Administration empower local communities with the necessary tools to grow their economy, attract investments and create jobs in rural New Mexico,” said U.S. Commerce Secretary Dan Evans. The Rural Readiness program is needed to focus an economic development strategy that is tailored to the specific assets and constraints faced in rural New Mexico. This program will fill a niche that cannot be serviced entirely by the rural Economic Development Districts who have limited ability to exploit statewide and national resources with the success of the Rural Readiness Council, which has strong political and private-sector involvement. This program will combine technical expertise with leveraging capacity to identify market capabilities in rural communities throughout New Mexico. It seeks to facilitate the diversification of stagnant markets in these communities and to identify emerging industries and to provide seed capital and other necessary services to ensure that these opportunities generate increased employment and higher wages. Those interested in more information or applying for participation in the program may contact the Austin Regional Office of the Economic Development Administration at (512) 381-8150. --END--
