Treats for Troops March 08, 2004

Dear Friends,

Treats for Troops was a big success. Thanks to Tony, Jackie and Donnie at The Peak 100.3, the Girl Scouts, UPS, Comcast, and the NM Guard, over 6,000 boxes of cookies have been sent to our troops overseas.
Heather helps pack cookies this year as the Peak`s Tony looks on...

The Peak started this three years ago when Amber Williams, a Peak employee, dropped her brother-in-law off at the airport. He and his unit were being deployed. When saying goodbye, one of the guys said he was sorry he wouldn`t be home when his Girl Scout cookies got delivered and he asked a family member to mail them to him. That gave Amber the idea, and it has grown bigger every year.

People who bought boxes to send wrote messages on stick-on labels and attached them to the cookies.

Floyd from Cedar Crest was an "Old GI" and just wanted to send some. Some people bought entire cases of their loved one`s favorites and had them shipped. Kids drew pictures and wrote thank you`s and I love you`s and please come home soon`s. There were prayers, and little pieces of advice from veterans that ranged from funny to touching.

"T
hanks, New Mexico, for brightening the day of friends and family far from home.
--Heather Wilson

And as Scouts packed the cookies surrounded by men and women in uniform, reading the prayers and words of support, they learned a little about service and sacrifice while performing a simple act of kindness for some young New Mexicans a long way from home.

Thanks to all who bought a box and to all who worked so hard this weekend to make it happen.

Wish you were here,
