Wilson Statement on Extension of Lockheed Martin Contract December 13, 2002

Albuquerque, NM - Congresswoman Heather Wilson released the following statement today after Department of Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham announced a five-year extension of Lockheed Martin’s contract to operate Sandia National Laboratories:
Rep. Heather Wilson:
“I`m very pleased that Lockheed-Martin has been awarded a five-year contract extension by the Department of Energy. The extension of the contract is a mark of approval for the steady hand that Lockheed Martin brings as a manager, but also for the incredible work done at Sandia every day by some of our nation’s best scientists and engineers. “Sandia has been central to ensuring that our nation’s nuclear deterrent remains safe and reliable. Maintaining our nation’s aging nuclear weapons has been a challenging job in an era where we no longer conduct underground nuclear tests. The Lab has also proven to be a good neighbor with ideas and innovations that can contribute to our state’s economic development. They worked diligently with our state’s congressional delegation to upgrade the Sandia pension program, and they’ve provided technical assistance to dozens of small businesses in New Mexico. “Under Lockheed Martin’s capable management, Sandia has received formal DOE appraisal ratings of Outstanding for an unprecedented 9 years. That’s a record to be proud of, and is a solid foundation on which Lockheed Martin can now continue to build. “As we fight a War on Terrorism and work to secure the nation while strengthening our economy, I know we can continue to turn to the dedicated men and women of Sandia and Lockheed Martin for leadership and solutions to our most complicated problems.” -END-
