Wilson votes to spark U.S. Economy October 24, 2001

New Mexico could see $64 million in unemployment assistance
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today cast a vote to strengthen the U.S. Economy and provide billions of dollars for people unemployed in the wake of September 11th’s terrorist attacks. The Economic Security and Recovery Act of 2001 (H.R. 3090) also accelerates and increases tax relief benefits for working families. “Now, more than ever, America’s economy needs a boost. Let’s get to work,” said the New Mexico lawmaker after casting her vote to bolster our country’s financial environment. “We need to provide help to individuals who are feeling the crunch and we need to help the businesses who employ them get back on their feet. I believe that the Economic Security and Recovery Act of 2001 is a growth package that will help put Americans and New Mexicans back to work, and it’s what we need today.” New Mexico stands to receive $64 million in unemployment assistance from the stimulus bill, including $19 million to help with health care insurance needs and $45 million for direct cash assistance. Nationally, $3 billion and $9 billion will be directed to each of those needs. Citing a spat of recent layoffs in New Mexico, Wilson says that New Mexicans have felt the effects of our current economic slowdown and that relief is quite welcome in New Mexico. Sprint, AT&T;, EMCORE Corp., and Phelps Dodge have all announced significant layoffs in recent days, costing New Mexicans hundreds of jobs. “This bill addresses the very human needs we have in New Mexico, in New York, and throughout our country,” says Wilson. Working families will also get immediate help through a series of tax relief measures, including the advancement of the effective date of the 25% marginal rate cut from last spring’s relief bill. Individuals who received a partial rebate will have their payments topped off to $300 for individuals and $600 for couples. People who filed a tax return in 2000 but weren’t eligible for a rebate will now get a payment. The stimulus package also offers incentives for employers to create jobs, spur innovation, and invest in our country’s future.
