Visiting Our Nation`s Capital... and the Pandas January 18, 2001

Hundreds of New Mexicans visited our nation`s capital this past weekend to watch the 54th Presidential Inauguration.

It`s exciting, and this is a great time to visit Washington D.C. But, you don`t have to wait for an inauguration to explore our nation`s history and learn about the federal government.

My office can help with your trip to D.C. Have a look at the "Tours" section of my website for information about things to do and see while in D.C.

A MONUMENT TO FREEDOM
The best place to start your tour of the Capital is the Capitol -- on Capitol Hill. The building itself is one of the largest in the world. The twin-shelled dome stands 285 feet above the ground and weighs nine million pounds. The statue on top of the dome is called Freedom, and inside the dome are priceless works of art depicting scenes in American history. Guided tours are conducted daily from 9:00am to 3:45pm, starting in the Rotunda.

You can order tour tickets on-line, or read some practical advice about how to get around Washington, D.C.

BAMBOO FOR LUNCH
One of the neatest things to come to Washington D.C. lately are the giant pandas Mei Xiang and Tian Tian. Get information here about visiting them, or have a look at the PandaCams at the National Zoo.
