Dear Friend,
In honor of Women’s History Month, March 2005, I am asking New Mexicans to send me nominations of women in New Mexico that have given special service to our community, but may have never received recognition for their good deeds. This year’s national theme is “Women Change America.”
Nomination form
Every year hundreds of women make incredible sacrifices for our community, and most do it in anonymity. This is a great way for members of the community to say thank you to the many volunteers and unsung heroes that make our community so strong.
Last year many people joined me in the effort. This year I look forward to learning about many more heroic women who have impacted people’s lives across our great state.
All nominations must be received by March 18, 2005 and all nominees must be female residents of New Mexico. Nominations can be made posthumously.
Please use the nomination form if you know of someone deserving of this recognition. If you have any further questions, please feel free to call my office at 505-346-6781.
All nominees and their nominators are asked to hold the date of Wednesday, March 30, 2005 from 5:30pm – 6:30pm in their calendars. We will be honoring all nominees that evening, at a location to be determined.
Sincerely,
BACKGROUND In 1978, the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County (California) Commission on the Status of Women initiated a “Women’s History Week.” Later in 1987, at the request of museums, libraries, and educators across the country, the National Women’s History Project petitioned Congress to expand the celebration to the entire month of March.
A National Women’s History Month Congressional Resolution was quickly passed with strong bipartisan support in both the House and the Senate.
"Women Changing America" is the new theme for National Women`s History Month 2005.
