| Thousands of kids were “Safe at Home” with Pat McKernan
Albuquerque, NM – Representative Heather Wilson today remembered fondly the work that Pat McKernan did for New Mexico’s children, including kids in foster care.
“He was a great guy,” said Wilson after hearing that the long-time Albuquerque Dukes manager passed away this week after battling cancer. “Albuquerque will definitely miss him, and I’m certain his soul will smile with every crack of a bat in New Mexico.”
“Throughout the years, Pat’s commitment to children in need was always crystal clear. He provided thousands of free tickets for kids in foster care through the “Safe at Home” program. We were always, and continue to be, grateful for his dedication to families and kids.”
Most recently, Wilson worked with McKernan so that Wilson could play baseball in a Dukes uniform. Wilson was on the Congressional baseball team in Washington in June 2000 and, with McKernan’s help, dirtied a Dukes jersey on the diamond.
“My heart goes out to Pat’s family during this difficult time. While nobody can fully understand their loss, they are not alone in their grief, nor in their joy as they remember Albuquerque’s own “Mr. Baseball.”
