Wilson Supported Prescription Drug Bill Guarantees Coverage for All Medicare Recipients September 15, 2000

RX drug plan needs to be affordable, available, voluntary; Provides largest reduction in retail drug costs for New Mexico seniors
WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Heather Wilson reiterated her commitment to passing a prescription drug benefit that would be available to all Medicare recipients earlier today. Despite little evidence from the President or Democrat members of Congress that they are willing to set politics aside and work out a prescription drug plan that is affordable, voluntary and guaranteed to all Medicare beneficiaries, Wilson made it clear that she will continue to fight for New Mexico`s seniors. "Runaway drug costs have threatened the retirement security of thousands of New Mexicans. Some older New Mexicans have to choose between putting food on the table and the prescription drugs they need to live healthy lives. That`s just not right," Wilson said. "The plan that passed the House and is pending in the Senate gives people the power to choose the plan that best fits their needs, and everyone is covered for high out-of-pocket drug costs. This voluntary plan would be affordable and available to all." Specifically, the bill Wilson voted for would: * Lower drug prices and expands access to prescription drugs for all beneficiaries without threatening the patient-doctor relationship. * Protect against higher drug prices and runaway out-of-pocket costs. * Expand seniors` right to choose the coverage that best suits their needs through a voluntary and universally-offered benefit. * Reject big government approach with a public-private partnership that lowers premiums. * Invest $40 billion to modernize and strengthen Medicare. * Ensure that today`s scientific research and medical innovation will continue to find tomorrow`s cures. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the retail cost of medicine would decline by 25% if this program were adopted, compared to a 12% estimated cost savings that offered no choice for seniors. On the same day the House passed the Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit, the House also passed -- and Wilson supported -- a bill to allow medicine made in FDA approved factories to be imported from Mexico and Canada. "American`s have been subsidizing low drug prices in other countries. It`s time our seniors get the low prices too," Wilson said. Wilson called on leaders of both parties and the President to set aside the election year rhetoric and get this job done.
