Domenici & Wilson Pleased With Deadline Extension On Wheels Museum Purchase Option January 14, 2000

Railroad Gives Museum Supporters More Time to Find Funding

ALBUQUERQUE -- Senator Pete Domenici and Congresswoman Heather Wilson today applauded the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe (BNSF) Railway for giving the Wheels Museum supporters another 30 days to find the funding needed to meet the $3 million purchase price for the old Santa Fe railroad repair property in Albuquerque.

Jim O'Neil, a BNSF vice president, today informed the New Mexico lawmakers that the company will give Wheels Museum supporters until Feb. 15 to make an offer on the vacant 27.32-acre Santa Fe railroad repair property in downtown Albuquerque. As a result of intervention by Wilson and Domenici last November, supporters gained an extension through Jan. 15 to acquire the financial support needed to buy the property.

"I truly appreciate Burlington Northern's cooperation to give the Wheels Museum every opportunity to acquire this property," Domenici said. "The planned museum would be a significant addition to Albuquerque's downtown and add to the diversity of the area. I hope the supporters will use the next month to do what they need to move this project forward."

"Burlington Northern's continued cooperation in this matter illustrates the commitment the railroad has to the local community," Wilson said. "The planned museum will anchor redevelopment efforts in the neighborhood and will be a great addition. I think it is great that a group of people have come together and want to do something to preserve Albuquerque's past and to do something for Albuquerque's future."

O'Neil indicated that BNSF would "make a final decision on the disposition of the property on Feb. 15, 2000."

Last year, Wilson and Domenici worked to secure $300,000 in federal funding to help Bernalillo County conduct a feasibility study on the Wheels Museum. The funding, provided through the Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) Economic Development Initiative Program, became law in October as part of the FY 2000 Veterans Affairs, Housing and Urban Development and Independent Agency Appropriations Bill.
