Wilson Supports Breast Cancer Awareness Month October 30, 2007

Activities and outreach in October designed to raise awareness of disease

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Heather Wilson supported H. Con. Res. 230 today, a resolution supporting the observance of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

October is designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month to bring attention and increase awareness of Breast Cancer and the importance of early detection.

“I support the ideals of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and I encourage women who may be at risk for this disease to get a yearly mammogram,” said Wilson. “Early detection and screening for breast cancer is the best way to fight this disease.”

In 2006, there were approximately 212,920 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women in the United States. An estimated 40,970 women will die from breast cancer this year.

Currently, mammograms and clinical breast exams are the most effective methods of screening for breast cancer. Women over 40 years old and those most at risk for cancer are encouraged to have a mammogram on a yearly basis.
