Wilson Supports Small Businesses June 21, 2007

House Passes Legislation to Strengthen Small Business Development
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Heather Wilson this week supported several bills to strengthen the small businesses that create most new jobs.

The House passed four bills that will benefit job creation and small business development. They are H.R. 2359, the SBA Entrepreneurial Development Programs Act of 2007; H.R. 2366, the SBA Veterans’ Programs Act of 2007; H.R. 2284, which amends the Small Business Act to add assistance from the Small Business Development Centers to Indian tribes; and H.R. 2397, the SBA Women’s Business Programs Act of 2007.

“Small businesses create most new jobs,” Wilson said. “They drive the economy.” “Government cannot create wealth, but it should promote policies that encourage investment and new jobs. That means low taxes and fair regulations so that small businesses can thrive.”

The legislation includes grants for women-owned, Native American-owned and veteran-owned businesses, clarifies the definition of Small Business Development Centers, and improves outreach and training opportunities for these entrepreneurs. The American economy is growing, and has created more than 7.5 million new jobs since August 2003. Unemployment is low, federal deficits are diminishing, federal revenue is surging and homeownership remains high.

In February 2004, the Congress set a national goal to cut the deficit in half by 2009, and achieved it three years early. Wilson supports lower taxes and policies that encourage economic growth. She voted for the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001 (EGTRRA) and the Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003 (JGTRRA), which have combined to significantly reduce the tax burden on New Mexico families and helped spur the growth that has created jobs.

Last year, 642,000 New Mexicans paid lower income taxes because of these two laws, which reduced the marriage penalty, lowered income taxes, increased child tax credits and created of a new lower 10 percent tax bracket that has helped over a half-million New Mexicans.
