Ending the Marriage Penalty February 15, 2000

Dear Friends,

Nobody likes high taxes, but what really bothers us is taxes that are unfair. At the top of my list of unfair taxes is the marriage penalty. On average, married New Mexicans pay $1400 more a year in taxes just because they are married. That`s enough to pay for a semester at UNM or three months of groceries.

I think it`s about time we started honoring marriage and stopped taxing it.

The big tax bill that was vetoed last summer eliminated the marriage penalty. Some members of Congress -- including me -- wanted to keep working at it and pass some individual bills this year that will make the tax code fairer.

Last Thursday night we passed legislation in the House that I co-sponsored that will eliminate the marriage penalty for over 145,000 New Mexicans. It still has to go through the Senate and to the President, but it was a solid first dwon. We`ll keep working at it.

Happy Valentine`s Day

Wish You Were Here,

Heather
