Keeping Our Forests Healthy December 10, 2003

Dear Friends, Isleta Pueblo learned a lesson. When we don`t maintain the Bosque, a cigarette butt and a stiff breeze can lead to disaster. The Lucero fire in April 2000 narrowly missed homes and destroyed hundreds of acres of the Bosque. Governor Lucero jokes that the Lucero fire wasn`t named for him: it wasn`t his fault. But he and the Tribal Council decided to act. Last Friday, Interior Secretary Gale Norton and I went down to take a look at their progress.
One of the tribal members, Dominic Lente has gotten pretty good at operating a machine that looks something like a combine harvester. It cuts brush and small trees and turns them into mulch that it spreads on the forest floor. He can clear about 12 acres a day of Russian Olive and Salt Cedar leaving behind native Cottonwoods along the river that are less prone to catastrophic fire and use less water. Last week the President signed the Healthy Forests Act that will accelerate projects like this throughout the west in priority areas like watersheds and where federal land is right next to communities. Our federal forests are not healthy. They are full of fuel and disease. I hope we’ll see more projects like Isleta`s and healthier, safer forests to enjoy. Wish you were here,
