| Bill includes study for city VA cemetery |

| WASHINGTON -- The U.S. House and Senate have taken an initial step toward establishing a new national veterans cemetery in Albuquerque.
Within an appropriations bill funding the Departments of Veterans Affairs and Housing and
Urban Development -- which both chambers passed Thursday -- is language directing the Department of Veterans Affairs to conduct a feasibility study on the proposed cemetery.
The language, authored by Rep. Heather Wilson, an Albuquerque Republican, was a compromise to actual funding of the project, which would replace the cemetery in Santa Fe when it reaches full capacity.
"It tells the Veterans Administration to begin a
survey of where the next veterans cemeteries need to be built and to include the Albuquerque area," Wilson said. "This is the first step to replacing the Santa Fe National Cemetery."
In addition, the bill funds a $700,000 request by Rep. Tom Udall, a Santa Fe Democrat, to provide a permanent home for the Santa Fe Farmer`s market.
The bill now goes to the president for final approval. |
