Wilson Says Base Closures Far Away July 21, 2001

Visit KRQE.com
July 20th, 2001 (KRQE News 13) Albuquerque, NM-Another round of military base closures may not come so soon after all. New Mexico Congresswoman Heather Wilson tells News 13 that the Department of Defense is under-informed and under-prepared. Kirtland barely escaped the last round of closures in 1995. The Bush administration is pushing for more closures, but Wilson says the Pentagon can`t even answer some fundamental questions. Wilson met with the Defense Secretary and his staff Thursday. She says the pentagon has not conducted a top-to-bottom review of what bases are most useful. B ut the Bush administration will try to get new base closure legislation passed in the next week or two. Wilson says she won`t support it. But if it does pass, she says Kirtland Air Force Base and White Sands Missile Range should be safe. She says Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis and Holloman Air Force Base in Alamogordo may be a little more difficult to protect, when and if another round comes our way. Despite her doubts, Wilson says New Mexico always needs to be ready. Wilson says there is strong opposition on capitol hill for another round of closures this year. She says it will likely be put off for at least one year. All of New Mexico`s bases are considered valuable to the US military, because we have more of two very important things... Sunshine and open space.
