Congresswoman responds to Powell’s presentation to the UN

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congresswoman Heather Wilson issued the following statement on the evidence presented by Secretary of State Colin Powell to the United Nations on Iraq’s pattern of deception:
“Secretary Powell made a compelling presentation to the UN today. The UN gave Iraq one last chance to meet its obligations through Resolution 1441. Iraq has had 12 years of second chances. It is deceiving the UN and avoiding its obligation to get rid of its chemical and biological weapons. Saddam Hussein is hoping the international community will show the weakness it has shown in the past. Appeasement is not an answer, and his time is running out."

“This is also a test of the continued relevance of the United Nations. If UN resolutions can be violated with impunity, they are devoid of meaning and the UN will increasingly be marginalized and irrelevant.”

Wilson is the first woman veteran in Congress. As an Air Force officer, she worked with NATO on defense planning and arms control. After leaving the Air Force in 1989, she became Director for European Defense Policy and Arms Control on the National Security Council staff at the White House for President George H.W. Bush.
