Wilson Announces Over $550 Thousand Awarded to Albuquerque Police Department for DNA Database August 19, 2002

Database can help police crack unsolved crimes
Albuquerque, NM -Congresswoman Heather Wilson today announced that the City of Albuquerque Police Department has been awarded a grant by the U.S. Department of Justice to help build its DNA database. The funds were authorized under the DNA Analysis Backlog Elimination Act of 2000. “Over the past few years, we have learned how invaluable DNA evidence can be to solving crime,” said Wilson. “With this grant, the Albuquerque police department will be able to more fully develop this useful tool and bring resolution to many crimes that could otherwise remain unsolved.” It is estimated that the Albuquerque Police Department Crime Laboratory and the New Mexico Department of Public Safety will examine 785 cases where no suspect has been identified. The DNA profiles that will be developed through this program will be entered into a forensic index and compared to convicted offender records from local, state, and national databases. Through this comparison, a projected 10 percent of unsolved crimes could be solved. DNA analysis used in conjunction with the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) is a powerful investigative tool beginning at the crime scene with collection of evidence and ending in justice served. For the CODIS program to be effective and reach its full crime-fighting potential, DNA databases must contain both offender profiles and DNA profiles from crime scene evidence. DNA is especially useful in cases where no suspect is known. --END--
