Wilson Secures Support for Neighborhood Jobs Effort December 01, 2005

Helping Neighbors that Are Busy Helping Each Other
Albuquerque, NM - Congresswoman Heather Wilson today announced $20,000 in federal funds she requested for the East Central Ministries Program of Albuquerque for their job training program. “This funding is applied directly to job creation efforts where it’s most needed in the LaMesa and Trumbull neighborhoods,” Wilson said, speaking today at East Central Ministries. “The economy is strong and growing, but training can make the difference in helping a jobseeker take advantage of opportunities. East Central Ministries Program plays an important role, and I`m pleased to have secured this support for their work.” “East Central Ministries has been doing vital work in the La Mesa neighborhood,” said City Councilor Martin Heinrich. “It is quite heartening to see Congresswoman Wilson recognize the importance of their efforts towards community based economic success.” East Central Ministries concentrates on strengthening the lower-income East Central neighborhoods of Albuquerque. Coupled with spiritual ministries, East Central Ministries includes tutoring, life skills programs, mentoring, and basic classes, such as computer use and English as a second language. They also have three community gardens and a neighborhood-run community cooperative. Among their programs are leadership and mentoring opportunities for Native American youth. Congress set aside the money, a grant through the Department of Housing and Urban Development, at Wilson`s request in the $69.9 billion Transportation, Treasury, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Bill (H.R. 3058), which was passed by the House 392-31 on November 18 and presented to the President just three days ago to be signed into law early this month.
