Wilson Says NNSA Plans Progressing for Major Expansion in Mesa del Sol October 24, 2006

Initial Proposals Submitted for National Nuclear Security Administration’s Planned 1,000-Employee Site
Albuquerque, NM – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today announced plans are progressing as the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) is moving forward with an effort to locate a large facility in the Mesa del Sol development south of Kirtland Air Force Base. The NNSA`s Albuquerque Transportation and Technology Center (ATTC) would employ 1,000 people in total, consolidating 800 jobs from the Albuquerque area and bringing 200 additional jobs to New Mexico. Wilson, who initially announced the effort August 1, 2006, said that more than 60 companies responded to GSA’s request for expressions of interest in the project. Many of those 60 submitted proposals in response to the Phase I bid solicitation that went out July 31, 2006. A maximum of 5 companies will be invited to submit additional information and move forward to Phase II. Anticipated award of the project will be early 2007. NNSA is the semi-autonomous agency within the Department of Energy that manages Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories. The Transportation and Technology Center plans call for a 40-acre site with 3 to 5 buildings comprising 306,949 rentable feet. The target for construction completion would be early 2009. “This is a superb fit for the NNSA, and comes on the heels of the opening of the University Blvd. extension,” Wilson said. “Mesa del Sol has the space they need and proximity to Kirtland Air Force Base. We expect major growth and new jobs at Mesa del Sol and it is increasingly living up to its promise. Central New Mexico is a nerve center for technology and national security jobs and this new facility would be another building block.” As planned, the project would consolidate six functions into one site. The new facilities would provide capabilities for NNSA transportation, security, emergency operations and research and development, as well as replace outdated or aging facilities. For more about the NNSA, visit www.doe.nnsa.gov. The NNSA was founded in 2000 by Congress. The agency’s mission is to maintain and enhance the safety, security, reliability and performance of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile without nuclear testing; reduce global danger from weapons of mass destruction; provide the U.S. Navy with safe and effective nuclear propulsion; and respond to any nuclear and radiological emergencies in the U.S. and abroad.
