Wilson Responds to Proposed Changes at the Air Force Academy
March 28, 2003
Washington, DC
—Representatives Heather Wilson (R-NM) responded today to Air Force plans to address recent allegations of sexual assault at the Air Force Academy in Colorado. As part of her response, Wilson sent a letter to Air Force Secretary James Roche. Excerpts of the letter follow:
“We don’t want sexual predators in our Air Force or in our Academy. An environment – which seems to prevail at the Academy – in which large numbers of women believe that if they report a violent crime it won’t be handled appropriately is cancerous. Strong action must be taken to restore safety for women, and restore confidence in the integrity of the Air Force.
“Today’s recommendations for action are only the beginning. There will be no easy fixes and restoring the confidence and trust of young officer candidates will take time. What we say here in Washington won’t matter nearly as much as what they experience in their lives at the Academy.
“I believe you need to create an atmosphere in which women are respected as full partners in our nation’s defense, and sexually demeaning comments or gestures toward female cadets are not allowed.
“I know that you and General Jumper have spent a great deal of time on this matter over the last two months. But we are only at the beginning of the beginning. I look forward to continuing to work with you to make sure the Academy is safe for young women and producing officers of whom all of us can be proud.”
Last week, Wilson called for a hearing in the House Armed Services Committee to further explore the culture at the Academy. The hearing will be held on April 1st.
A distinguished graduate of the Air Force Academy, Heather Wilson is the first and only woman veteran to serve in the U.S. Congress. She serves as a member of the House Armed Services Committee and is Vice Chair of the Armed Services Strategic Forces Subcommittee.
