Wilson supports CAFÉ standards and increases in renewable fuels
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Heather Wilson (R-NM) today voted in favor of H.R. 6, the Energy and Security Independence Act of 2007, after the Senate stripped the disincentives for oil and gas production and tax hikes on the oil and gas industry from the bill. The bill now heads to the President’s desk for his signature.
The Senate amended the House bill and removed the crippling tax increase on energy producers. Under the new legislation, the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) standard, which sets the standard of fuel efficiency for cars and light trucks, will increase to 35 miles per gallon by 2020. Additionally, the legislation includes a Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), which mandates the use of 36 billion gallons of renewable fuel by 2022.
“I am pleased the Senate, under the leadership of Senator Domenici, removed the excessive taxes on the oil and gas industry that would have threatened jobs in New Mexico and increased home heating and travel costs,” said Wilson.
“This bill sets reasonable standards for expanding the supply of renewable fuels, and I support the increases in fuel economy standards.”
Wilson believes these policy initiatives are not mutually exclusive with maintaining domestic oil and gas production and initiatives for clean coal and new nuclear power sources.
Wilson has introduced four key energy bills this year, all of which contained many initiatives aligned with the intent of both the Senate energy bill passed in June of this year and supported by both Senator Pete Domenici and Congresswoman Wilson, as well as the House bill voted on today.
