Wilson Works for Stronger Auto Mileage Standards & Renewable Energy
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today released a letter to Rep. Steny Hoyer, House Majority Leader, in which she urges consideration of Senate-passed legislation that takes steps to reduce gasoline consumption.
Last month, Wilson offered the comprehensive proposal to promote renewable fuels and encourage conservation as an amendment in the House Energy and Commerce Committee, where it was rejected by majority Democrats, who ruled her energy amendment as “non-germane” to the energy legislation under consideration. Wilson said she plans to introduce it as separate legislation in the House.
Text of the letter is below:
July 12, 2007
The Honorable Steny Hoyer House Majority Leader H~107 Washington, D.C. 20515
Dear Majority Leader Hoyer,
Gasoline prices soared this week -- shooting up 20 to 40 cents in some parts of the country. AAA reported a national average gas price of $3 a gallon Wednesday. The national average has been as high as $3.22, in late May.
On June 22, 2007 the Senate approved HR.6 by a vote of 65-27, which includes provisions on biofuels, energy efficiency, and carbon sequestration, along with provisions to increase the nation’s Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE).
The Senate-passed legislation establishes an escalating requirement to reduce America’s gasoline consumption, beginning with a 20 percent savings target in 10 years -- equivalent to more than 32 billion gallons per year -- and enough to reduce world oil prices by more than $2.50/barrel.
Progress on meaningful energy legislation in the House is stalled. I urge you to take up the Senate passed Energy bill. We need a balanced, long term energy policy to make America more energy independent and preserve the beauty of the land we love. Gasoline and energy prices are high, and we need to do everything we can to keep them down.
Sincerely,
Heather Wilson Member of Congress
