Wilson Announces Nearly $500 Thousand Awarded to Albuquerque Schools for Physical Fitness Education September 24, 2002

Grant will help schools teach students how to be healthy for a lifetime
Washington, DC --Congresswoman Heather Wilson announced today that the Albuquerque Public School System has been awarded a grant of $499,936 from the U.S. Department of Education for physical fitness and health education programs. The funding, which comes from the Carol M. White Physical Fitness Program, will be given to schools to support innovative approaches to health and physical activity that will equip students with the knowledge to be healthy and physically active for a lifetime. The program will fund staff development and teacher training, as well as the purchase of equipment to enable students to participate in physical education activities. “There`s been a lot of talk recently about obesity in America and I`m particularly concerned about the increasing numbers of children who are being diagnosed with Type II diabetes at very young ages. We need to pay greater attention to what our children eat and get them out, moving and having fun being active,” said Wilson. “This grant will help give Albuquerque`s kids a great chance to play and develop healthy habits for a lifetime.” --END--
