Wilson Urges Pentagon to Renew Charter of Committee for Women in the Military February 27, 2002

Congresswoman addresses importance of addressing women’s issues
in private meeting with Deputy Secretary Wolfowitz

Washington, DC-Congresswoman Heather Wilson met today with Deputy Secretary of Defense, Paul Wolfowitz to urge that the Pentagon renew the charter for the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services (DACOWITS) and appoint new membership to replace those whose terms have expired. The Pentagon has been reviewing the current charter and will soon make a decision as to whether or not to allow the committee to continue.

“The committee serves in an advisory capacity and is very important to women serving in the military,” said Wilson. “As a veteran myself, I know that women in the military need opportunities to express concerns without fear of reprisal from their chain of command. I know that Dr. Wolfowitz values the service of women in the military. The advisory committee provides information to senior leadership that they would not get through the regular chain of command. The Department of Defense should renew the charter.”

DACOWITS was established in 1951 to provide recommendations relevant to the optimum utilization of women in America’s armed forces and on quality of life issues impacting the mission readiness of our military women. DACOWITS’ recommendations have been instrumental in effecting changes to Department of Defense policy, and improvements to the quality of life for military women.

Heather Wilson is the only woman veteran in the U.S. Congress. A graduate of the Air Force Academy, she served on DACOWITS and was Vice Chair of the committee when Dick Cheney was Secretary of Defense.
