Wilson Only House Republican to Oppose Motion that Would Have Stripped NM Funds January 31, 2007

Supports Continuing Resolution to Fund Federal Government, NM Priorities

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today was the only House Republican to oppose a Motion to Recommit that would have stripped vital nuclear weapons program funding, which supports the work and employees of national labs in New Mexico. Wilson said the programs are important to New Mexico, and Senator Domenici worked hard to include the funds.

After the Motion to Recommit was defeated by a vote of 228-196, Wilson then voted for the Continuing Resolution, which passed 286-140, and said her support hinged on this important funding for national labs, as well as funding for veterans health, education, and health care.

“These funds will support some very important work in our national labs,” Wilson said. “The funds passed today strengthen a lot of worthy causes, from Head Start to Pell Grants, and from healthcare for our veterans to the global HIV effort. These health and education priorities were important considerations for me.”

Highlights of the Continuing Resolution:

  • Boosts Pell grant funding by $615 million.
  • Increases Head Start funding by 103.7 million.
  • Meets highway funding guarantees by including
  • $4 billion for transportation.
  • Helps community health centers with an additional $207 million.
  • Prioritizes law enforcement funding, including local and state grants, such as the COPS program.
  • Supports veterans’ health with $3.6 billion.
  • Bolsters military housing with $500 million.
  • Funds the global HIV/AIDS initiative with $1.3 billion.
