Twenty-one State Attorneys General Support FISA Immunity
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Heather Wilson (R-NM) sent a letter showing bipartisan support to their colleagues in the House urging them to vote in favor of the Senate-passed reforms to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) expected on the House floor this week.
Also sent to House members was a letter from twenty-one state Attorneys General, expressing their bipartisan support for the immunity provisions contained in the Senate bill that would provide retroactive legal immunity for telecommunications providers who may have provided intelligence-collection assistance following the attacks on September 11, 2001.
“If carriers and other private parties run the risk of facing massive litigation every time they assist the government or law enforcement, they will lack incentives to cooperate, with potentially devastating consequences for public safety,” stated the letter from the Attorneys General.
Wilson agrees, and urges other members of the House to support FISA legislation passed overwhelmingly by the Senate on Tuesday evening that includes targeted carrier immunity.
A bill permanently reforming the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act is expected on the floor this week, as the 15-day short-term fix expires on Friday.
