WASHINGTON -- Congresswoman Heather Wilson announced that the FY 2000 Commerce, Justice, State and Judiciary Appropriations Act includes $750,000 for New Mexico to combat methamphetamine production. The funds were included in the bill at her request.
The additional funds will be used for more law enforcement officers, intelligence gathering and forensic capabilities, training and community outreach programs.
"Meth labs have become one of the most serious drug and law enforcement problems in New Mexico," Wilson said. "On March 9, I met with law enforcement officials from all agencies in New Mexico to talk about their priorities. Methamphetamine was at the top of the list -- particularly funds for more training of police and fire fighters on how to safely dismantle meth labs. I am pleased this important need in New Mexico will be addressed during the next year."
New Mexico has seen methamphetamine seizures swell from one kilo in 1996 to 39 kilos in 1998. In addition, Albuquerque has experienced a 300 percent increase in clandestine laboratories seized or dismantled during 1998.
"These needed funds will be used to allow local and state authorities to help combat methamphetamine labs and transportation of methamphetamine through the state," Wilson added.
