Site Receives First ‘Congress online’ Silver Mouse Award
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today was identified in an independent study as having one of the best Web sites in Congress. Wilson`s site received the first Congress Online Silver Mouse Award from the Congress Online Project, a joint research project of the Congressional Management Foundation and the George Washington University, funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts.
"We use the internet to help serve New Mexicans by giving them useful information and a way to participate in their government," said Wilson. "Using the internet, New Mexicans have a direct line to me and the services I can provide them as a member of Congress."
Wilson was one of a select few sites to be recognized by the study, "Congress Online: Assessing and Improving Capitol Hill Web Sites" for several of its innovative features designed to engage constituents. Wilson has a weekly e-newsletter that includes a "postcard" from Wilson about timely issues and activities on Capitol Hill. It has a "Cast Your Vote" feature that lets New Mexicans tell her directly how they would vote on an important upcoming issue. An events calendar provides information about upcoming events Wilson will be attending, as well as information about how to schedule a meeting in Albuquerque or Washington. And an "En Espanol" link on the site provides a Spanish version of the site for Spanish-speaking residents of New Mexico.
The study, written by the Congress Online Project, evaluated 605 Web sites in Congress - all Member offices, committee and leadership sites – to determine which sites were the best and to assess how well Congress was using this new communications medium. This research is the first to combine a comprehensive analysis and grading of all congressional Web sites. The study awarded 15 sites with the Congress Online Gold Mouse Awards and 20 sites with Silver Mouse awards.
The complete list of the Congress Online Gold and Silver Mouse Award winners is available in the report: www.congressonlineproject.org/webstudy2002.html.
