Wilson Statement on Making the Protect America Act Permanent January 28, 2008

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Heather Wilson (R-NM) today issued the following statement regarding the temporary extension of the Protect America Act:

“The Democrat leadership needs to stop playing games with our national security and pass a permanent fix to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) that gives immunity to the telecommunications companies and gives our intelligence agencies the tools they need to prevent another terrorist attack. They have had six months since the passage of the Protect America Act and a thirty day fix is insufficient. Our intelligence agencies need certainty and Congress should give it to them. The President is right to demand a permanent fix, not another temporary patch to this important law.”

Wilson is a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. She is the ranking member of the Technical and Tactical Intelligence Subcommittee and has been at the forefront of this issue since the determination was made that gaps in the law were leaving Americans vulnerable to a terrorist attack. Wilson believes that the Protect America Act balances the need to protect the civil liberties of U.S. citizens with the need to protect our citizens from attack and should be made permanent.
