Wilson Tours Albuquerque Manufacturer April 12, 2004

Wilson Welcomes Economy’s March & New Jobs

Albuquerque, NM – Even as Americans welcome a stream of encouraging economic news, Congresswoman Heather Wilson continues to make the rounds of Albuquerque area businesses for a firsthand look at job creation.

“After seven straight months of job creation, the American economy reached 308,000 jobs last month and that’s a good pace,” Wilson said. “Government can’t create wealth, but government can create the conditions for businesses to grow. That means low taxes and fair regulations.”

Wilson said that the U.S. economy is showing strength, with 10 straight months of growth in manufacturing.

She toured the manufacturing plant of Applied Thermal System, Inc., and was briefed on the company’s history, growth prospects and products. Applied Thermal expects continued growth over the next few years. The company designs and builds temperature-controlled equipment and automated/robotic systems.

While unemployment is lower than the average over the last three decades, Wilson said there is more to be done. Wilson is working to improve the growth climate in New Mexico through better highway and transportation infrastructure and low taxes. With Wilson’s support, the U.S. House has funded $35 million for three highway interchange reconstruction efforts in Albuquerque, and last week passed $1.7 billion over six years for the New Mexico highway program. That bill will next be considered by the Senate.

“Eight of every 10 new jobs in America are created by small businesses,” Wilson said.
