Wilson Supports Governor’s Call for Bed Tax Repeal
Albuquerque, NM — U.S. Congresswoman Heather Wilson today applauded Governor Bill Richardson’s call to repeal the nursing home bed tax. Wilson told the Governor she thinks his proposal should go a step farther by refunding the tax already paid by New Mexico seniors.
The entire text of Wilson’s letter to Governor Richardson follows:
January 18, 2006 The Honorable Bill Richardson Governor State Capitol Building , Room 400 Santa Fe, New Mexico 87510
Dear Governor Richardson,
I was glad to hear of your desire to repeal the nursing home bed tax announced yesterday in your State of the State address. This tax has been a burden on seniors in New Mexico and has cost seniors in nursing homes or their families more than $3,250 per year. While originally part of a proposal to gain federal matching funds and have the money refunded to seniors, the plan was not approved by the federal government and the tax was never refunded.
The announcement of your desire to repeal the bed tax is welcome news to seniors in New Mexico and has already been met with bipartisan support. I would suggest that you work in a similar bipartisan manner to go a step further and refund the tax that has already been paid by seniors as promised. Seniors in nursing homes are among the most vulnerable in our population and most are on fixed incomes. Refunding this tax to our seniors is the right thing to do.
Sincerely,
Heather Wilson Member of Congress
