FACT SHEET
WHAT?
An Artistic Discovery is the annual Congressional High School Art Competition and national exhibition of winning art from Congressional Districts across the United States. Students from New Mexico’s First Congressional District have proudly participated for the last ten years.
Best of Show artwork from each Congressional District is displayed in Washington, D.C.
WHY?
An Artistic Discovery provides an opportunity to encourage and recognize the rich artistic talents of young New Mexicans.
WHEN & HOW?
Artwork will be accepted on Thursday & Friday, March 11 & 12 from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Congressional office—20 First Plaza NW, Suite 603 (Copper & 2nd/3rd Streets). Art work will be on display March 17-31. The Awards Ceremony & Reception will be held Monday, March 22 in the early evening at a location to be announced. Entries must meet the guidelines outlined on this page and an entry form must accompany each entry.
GUIDELINES
The Competition is open to high school students from the First Congressional District only.
The artwork must be ready to hang (hooks, wire, adhesive hanger, etc). The artwork is required to be two-dimensional, no larger than 32 inches by 32 inches, including the frame, and no more than 4 inches in depth. Framing is not required, but is encouraged for the local competition. However a secure hanging device must be attached to the artwork for the local competition.
Artwork in the following categories will be accepted:
Paintings (oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.)
Drawings (pastels, colored pencils, pencils, charcoal, ink, markers, etc.)
Collage: Must be two dimensional
Prints (lithographs, silkscreen, block prints)
Mixed Media
Computer graphics
Photography
Entries must be original concept, design & execution and may not violate U.S. Copyright Laws.
Student Information/Release Form must be signed by the teacher, student and parent/guardian to certify originality of the art piece. Student’s name, address, and phone number must be on the back of the art.
A white 3”X2” tag with the student’s name and school name attached to the bottom front right hand corner of the art, unless it will damage the art. In which case the tag must be provided to post at the display.
Final decision regarding suitability for the exhibition in the Capitol is left to the final discretion of a panel of qualified persons chaired by the Architect of the Capitol.
Artists are limited to 3 pieces. The entire competition is limited to 150 pieces.
Artwork will not be accepted unless these guidelines are met. |
