Wilson Job Shadows at Outdoor Classroom |

Albuquerque – Although Congresswoman Heather Wilson is often seen at Albuquerque’s schools, usually she does her work for them in Washington, where Congress has nearly doubled the federal commitment to New Mexico schools since 1998 (from $288 million to $494 million in 2003). But today, Wilson took a more direct approach, pitching in to help plant the garden at Lowell Elementary School.
“Whether in a school or the workplace, I like to learn about what people experience. It’s a great way to keep pace with how decisions in Washington affect people where they live,” Wilson said. “Our teachers do a good job, and it’s important to keep providing them with the best tools available, such as teacher training or early reading programs for their students. This garden is a valuable hands-on learning opportunity.”
When votes are not scheduled in Washington, Wilson participates in “work days” throughout the community to better keep in touch with workers and employers. Last week, she rolled up her sleeves to help out at a local grocery store. Earlier this week it was at Frontier Restaurant, and recently she operated a curb and gutter machine at a west side neighborhood under construction.
Today’s scene was the outdoor class at Lowell Elementary School – a two-acre garden planted, tended and harvested by the Third-Fifth grade students. Wilson appreciates the school and the USDA for providing this valuable learning opportunity to Lowell students.
