Washington, DC - Congresswoman Heather Wilson announced today that the New Mexico Department of Public Safety has been awarded a grant of $1,257,000 by the U.S. Department of Justice to purchase first responder equipment. The grant gives the state the resources it needs to acquire personal protective equipment; chemical, radiological, and biological detection equipment; decontamination equipment; and specialized communication equipment.
“This funding will give New Mexico’s Police Officers, Firefighters and other emergency personnel the tools that they need to be prepared for today’s changing emergency scenarios,” said Wilson.
New Mexico has performed a statewide assessment of its first responder needs and capabilities as gathered by local jurisdictions. The assessment provided state officials with a threat vulnerability profile. With this information, the state developed a three-year statewide domestic preparedness strategic plan that it will be able to advance with more specialized and advanced equipment.
