Wilson Welcomes Water Funds for New Mexico
November 17, 2004
House Passes Bill with Gila Water Rights Provision
Washington, DC
– Congresswoman Heather Wilson today welcomed House passage of legislation that includes water settlement funds for New Mexico ranging from at least $66 million up to a potential $128 million. Wilson urged action on the bill in a September 27 letter to Congressman Richard Pombo, Chairman of the House Resources Committee. The Arizona Water Settlements Act (S. 437) settles water claims in Arizona and New Mexico. “I’m pleased that we have passed this important legislation,” Wilson said. “Water is the life of the southwest and good water policy is crucial to our economic growth.” The Senate has already acted on the bill, backed by both of New Mexico’s senators, and it will go on to the President for signature. The bill will provide for the waiver of claims presently being pursued against New Mexico irrigators in the upper Gila River valley. It also addresses the long-delayed development of the New Mexico unit of the Central Arizona Project, authorized by Congress in 1968. The effort is a critical element of water planning for southeastern New Mexico.
