Helping Hurricane Survivors |

Albuquerque, NM – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today said that contacts are available for people interested in helping survivors of Hurricane Katrina.
“We have countrymen and women who have lost everything, and I know people want to help,” Wilson said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost loved ones or homes. We’re proud of the rescuers, law enforcement, National Guard and volunteers who are there to help.”
Here’s how you can help:
Donations of money: 1-800-HELP-NOW or www.RedCross.org.
Contracting services should call the Louisiana Emergency Operations Center: 1-225-925-7500.
Volunteering equipment or services: 1-800-440-6728.
Please be patient, as all of these contacts are overwhelmed with callers. If you have family or friends who are victims of Katrina who need to register with FEMA, they can call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). This number does not provide immediate assistance such as food and water, but enrolls them in the system for potential rental assistance and other federal assistance, if they qualify.
Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff is chairing a Cabinet-level task force to coordinate all Federal assistance and recovery efforts. Resources are being made available through the National Response Plan, and about 90,000 square miles are considered disaster areas. The first priority is saving and sustaining lives, then beginning a long recovery and rebuilding effort.
