The Congressional Certificate of Merit April 04, 2000

What gives wings to our dreams is a quality education, and we must work together to make that a reality for every child, in every neighborhood, in every school across America. Talking about education, and how to make it better, is crucial. But we mustn’t forget today’s success stories: the student’s who will be tomorrow’s leaders.

Recognizing youth who succeed in school and are active in our community is so important, and each year it is my privilege to offer the Congressional Certificate of Merit to outstanding high school seniors from New Mexico’s First District. I need your help to find such students. The deadline for nominations is Monday, April 17, 2000, so time is short. Nominations can only be made by a school, and is usually done by principals and school counselors. But you can encourage students you know to ask their schools to consider nominating them.

This certificate is presented to students who display scholastic achievement, as well as participation in community service, and involvement in school and civic activities. In giving the Certificates of Merit, I believe it is important to recognize the accomplishments of well-rounded students, and to encourage their continued contributions to community life. These young men and women represent the leaders of tomorrow - they are one of our most valuable assets.

Last year, local high school principals and counselors submitted nominations, and twenty students were chosen from within the First District to receive the Congressional Certificate of Merit. Members of my staff attended each school award ceremony to present the certificates to the successful young men and women.

In addition to awarding the recipients with a certificate and a personal congratulatory letter, it will be my honor to read each student’s name and achievement into the Congressional Record. A copy of that record will also be presented to each student, along with the Congressional Certificate of Merit.

This year, nominations should be received in my Albuquerque office by no later than April 17, 2000. If you know of a high school senior who might be deserving of this award, please ask your school representative to call my office at (505) 346-6781 to request an application form.

Thank you for helping us to encourage these wonderful young students!
