Congress to Increase Veterans Spending, Education Funding
Washington, DC—Congresswoman Heather Wilson announced today that her budget priorities have been included in the FY 04 Budget the House of Representatives passed last night in a late night session. Included in the budget are increased funding levels for Veterans programs and Education. The budget passed the House by a vote of 216-211.
House Budget Chairman Jim Nussle agreed in negotiations with the Senate to Wilson’s request to increase funding for veterans programs to no less than $689 billion over 10 years, and $63.2 billion for FY 04, a 10% increase over the 2003 budget.
“Chairman Nussle has made good on his promise,” said Wilson. “I will continue to fight for those who have fought for our country.”
Budget Committee Chairman Jim Nussle told Wilson that he has agreed to accept the Senate approved level of veterans’ spending, which is $63.2 billion for FY 04, a 10% increase over the 2003 budget – and no less than $689 billion over 10 years.
Just last year, Congress passed the landmark legislation, “No Child Left Behind.” This year, Congress increased the budget authority on education by more than $70 billion over 10 years.
“We have passed a budget to support our Veterans, keep our promises on education, create jobs, and improve our nation’s health system,” said Wilson. This is a good thing for New Mexico.”
