Wilson Statement on Testimony by General Petraeus April 09, 2008

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Heather Wilson (R-NM), Ranking Member of the Technical and Tactical Intelligence Subcommittee, today issued the following statement on the testimony of General Petraeus before the House Committees on Armed Services and Foreign Affairs:

“The situation in Iraq has improved unevenly in the past six months. Security conditions have improved markedly. Political problems persist because the Iraqi central government is weak. An abrupt change of the American military mission from counter-insurgency to supporting the Iraqi Security Forces only, or an abrupt withdrawal of U.S. forces, could erode the security gains that have been achieved.

“We must continue to focus on America's vital national interests in Iraq: making sure Iraq does not become a safe haven for al Qaeda and that it does not become a source of instability in the region. Because we changed our strategy and worked with the tribes in the Sunni regions of Iraq on local security initiatives, there is very little al Qaeda in Iraq left in Anbar province.

“We must continue to train and equip the Iraqi Security Forces so that they can assume greater security responsibilities more rapidly.”
