Wilson Serves Lunch to Albuquerque Seniors, Talks Issues April 12, 2004

Albuquerque, NM – Congresswoman Heather Wilson was busy serving Albuquerque seniors lunch Monday at the Las Colinas Senior Center, but she was also listening to concerns about issues that are important to them, like healthcare.

Wilson talked with Albuquerque seniors about some of the issues that are uppermost on their minds, including Medicare and the new prescription drug coverage.

Wilson was able to pass along information about the implementation of the Medicare prescription plan, which has now approved 28 sponsors to provide older Americans savings on their prescription drugs, beginning June 1, through a new prescription drug card. Those discounts will be available for the rest of this year and 2005, followed by the full use of the new plan in 2006.

“I know that every dollar counts, and these cards will make a start with savings of 10 to 15 percent, and occasionally up to 25 percent on certain medicines,” Wilson said.

Wilson supported a Medicare prescription plan because it will help many New Mexico seniors, particularly those with lower incomes. About 45 percent of New Mexico’s seniors will qualify for coverage with no premiums or reduced premiums and deductibles.

“I’m pleased that by 2006 there will be prescription drug coverage for 55,000 New Mexicans who do not have it now,” Wilson said. “This program offers new help to those seniors who need it most.”
