Wings for our Dreams March 20, 2001

Inez Elementary students visit with their U.S. Representative

“What gives wings to our dreams is a quality education.”

By Niecy Taylor
Niecy is a sixteen-year old Cibola High School student serving an internship in Congresswoman Heather Wilson`s office.
Education is an important factor in the future of our nation, and it`s the foundation for many of the things to come. Congresswoman Heather Wilson often says that life is front-end loaded. She`s right. The decisions that we make today, and the effort we put into our education, will affect the path we take in life.

A solid education is necessary today more than ever before. Having an education is something that gives each of us individual power--a power that, no matter what background you come from or what adversity you face in life, no one can take away.

Many times we take for granted the education that we receive. We feel as though it’s something that is there and always will be there. Without good teachers in our classrooms teaching solid skills and trades, students of today would find ourselves in jeopardy.

"This is an excellent opportunity for high school students to show off what we can do, and maybe earn some money for school while we`re at it."

The teaching of good writing and reading skills is an important factor in our education. An example of that is here in Congresswoman Heather Wilson’s office, where interns help Congresswoman Wilson by writing letters, news releases, and articles for her e-newsletter. No matter what line of work you enter, chances are you`ll have to know how to write well.

Having a good education is something that will help you advance yourself in this fast growing world of technology, where the keyboard and world wide web have replaced pen and paper.

WRITING FOR DOLLARS
Comcast Cable is sponsoring an essay contest for high school students in Albuquerque that can help you pay for college. This is an excellent opportunity for high school students to show off what we can do, and maybe earn some money for school while we`re at it.

Comcast asks that you write an essay where you detail why an education is important to you. They will help pay for your college education by offering these scholarships to the top essay writers in each grade category:

  • High School Senior $4,000
  • High School Junior $3,000
  • High School Sophomore $2,000
  • High School Freshman $1,000

  • Entries must be postmarked no later than April 20, 2001 and must be typewritten.

The contest rules are as follow:

    1) The essay writing contest is limited to students grades 9 through 12 and students must be enrolled in and attending a high school located within the franchise areas served by Comcast Cable in the Metropolitan area. Students can pick up an Entry Form from your high school or from Comcast Cable’s office at 4611 Montbel Place NE.
