| APS Awarded School Violence Prevention Grant |

| ALBUQUERQUE -- Congresswoman Heather Wilson today announced that Albuquerque Public Schools' Student Support Services has been awarded a three-year, $535,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to assist drug and violence prevention efforts. Wilson, who supported APS's efforts to receive this grant, applauded the Department of Education's selection.
"Like other parents in Albuquerque, I am concerned about our children's safety at school. Schools should be a place to learn," Wilson said. "By preventing violence and drug abuse, we will help to make New Mexico's schools more productive places, not just for those youth who need this attention, but for all students."
The grant will serve six local middle schools. Funds will be used to recruit, hire and train five full-time drug prevention and school safety program coordinators. The coordinators will work with middle schools with significant drug, discipline, and/or violence problems.
"I sincerely believe we must ensure that all children, yours and mine, have a safe classroom where they can learn and grow," Wilson said.
Wilson has a long record of supporting prevention programs to combat juvenile violence in New Mexico. Most recently, she was selected to serve on the Bipartisan Task Force on Juvenile Justice.
