Wilson votes to bolster security of nation’s air travel system November 05, 2001

WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Heather Wilson today cast a vote to keep the friendly skies friendly and make air travel safer for Americans. Wilson released the following statement today after supporting the Young/Mica airline security bill: “I want the Congress to pass and the President to sign an airport security bill that will make flying safer. Both of the options the House considered are an improvement on the current system. Neither of them is perfect. Ultimately, through negotiation in Conference with the Senate, I hope we get a bill that sets tough, enforceable federal rules and provides the means to enforce those rules. It will not be exactly like the House bill and should be more flexible than the bill the Senate passed. “It should include more federal air marshals, well-trained professionals screening passengers, cargo screening, modifications to the aircraft themselves and improved security of aircraft at airports. People need to have confidence that terrorists can`t get on airplanes. “President Bush called me this afternoon and personally asked me to support the Young/Mica airline security bill so that we can ultimately get a bill from the Congress that will work. He felt it was important to the security of our air traffic system and I agreed to support the President during this national emergency.
