Wilson Gets Close-up Look at Village of Tijeras Water System August 16, 2005

$952,000 on their way to provide clean drinking water
Albuquerque, NM – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today visited the Village of Tijeras to announce continued federal funding to provide residents with clean drinking water. Wilson says she requested $952,000 in the Interior Appropriations bill that recently passed the U.S. House and was signed into law by the President. “This funding is very important and we are so grateful to Congresswoman Wilson,” said Village Mayor Gloria Chavez. “This is critical, and that’s why we’re so thrilled. We have wells out here that are dry, and we struggle every day to provide basic water services to residents in the Village of Tijeras. Congresswoman Wilson’s successful efforts to secure federal funding for Tijeras water will help us move forward in providing these services.” “I’m pleased to support federal funds for the Village of Tijeras. We are working to make clean water available throughout the community," Wilson said. Village officials say the $952,000 will be used for Phase III-C of the Village of Tijeras Water Supply System. This phase of the water project will extend water lines to an area North of I-40, where terrain makes it difficult to extend water lines. Phase III-D is the only remaining part of the system, in an area is in the area known as the Zamora area. When the entire water project is completed, the Village will have the potential to serve approximately 180 residential and commercial accounts. The Village of Tijeras has actively pursued funding for a community water system since the early 1990’s, when most Village residents were using domestic water wells. Wilson has supported federal funds for the project in previous years, including $870,000 through the Army Corps of Engineers and another $200,000 in federal funds in 2004.
