Urges USPS to reconsider decision on South Valley Distribution Center
Washington, DC - Congresswoman Heather Wilson met last week with Vice President of U.S. Postal Service Facilities, Rudolph K. Umscheid, to discuss the fate of a new South Valley postal distribution center. During the meeting, Wilson expressed her disappointment with the United States Postal Service’s (USPS) decision not to proceed with construction of a new processing and distribution center in Albuquerque’s South Valley and urged Umscheid to review and reverse this decision.
The text of the letter follows:
“As I stated in our meeting, the Postal Service cannot expect to save its way into prosperity. I understand in the past few years that the USPS has suffered large losses. Even with two rate increases, and a third rate increase expected this summer, several postal projects and services have been reduced. In an effort to curb spending, you have decided to freeze 800 construction projects, including the Albuquerque South Valley Postal Facility. However, an enormous amount of work and countless commitments have been made to build this facility by the Schwartzman Family (the sellers of the site), the Postal Service, officials with the Bernalillo County government and the people they represent.
“As requested by the Postal Service, Bernalillo County has committed to improve and upgrade infrastructure in the new postal facility area. In addition, numerous companies and businesses have chosen to invest in the area and move there, based on the construction and completion of the new facility. The Schwartzman family has made a number of commitments to help in the USPS with their goals, including donating land for roads and made a commitment to donate a site for a childcare facility for postal employees.
“I was pleased to learn that the construction of the Albuquerque South Valley Postal facilities is still on the USPS priority list. I am determined to make sure the USPS fulfills its commitment to build this new postal facility and I look forward to meeting with you again to discuss the status of the postal facility. This project is a critical component of economic development in Albuquerque’s South Valley. I am sure the USPS understands that a massive amount of work and numerous commitments have been made and will not allow this project to fall through the cracks.”
