Wilson Congratulates UNM on NASA Grants for Space-Related Lab Research January 12, 2006

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Heather Wilson today announced nearly $2.6 million in competitive federal grants to the University of New Mexico for NASA studies.

The NASA grants for space science research are part of a series of one-to-three year grants totaling $19.4 million to universities throughout the country. The focus is on laboratory studies of samples from meteorites, and understanding the chemical nature of planets and smaller bodies within the solar system. UNM researchers were awarded four project grants:

  • $1.08 million for microbeam studies of planetary materials.

  • $189,000 for extraterrestrial studies using nuclear interactions.

  • $875,000 for formation and alteration histories of chondritic materials.

  • $351,000 for petrologic, chemical and experimental investigations of early solar system materials.

    UNM total: $2.595 million

“Congratulations to UNM on these projects,” Wilson said. “New Mexico is on the leading edge of research in many fields. Investment in research can yield breakthroughs that improve understanding of the world we live in or lead to more research and new jobs.”
